Purpose:
The Jersey City Housing Authority provides space in four (soon to be five)
housing projects for PreK classes. The Jersey City Public Schools have
established eight PreK classes in the sites (two per site). The residents
of the housing projects then have access to a four year old PreK program
on site. The public schools rent the space and pay rent to the Tenant
Management Group at each site. The fifth site will be ready in 1999.
Benefits:
- Provides space for a preschool program in an area where it is sorely
needed.
- Enables the [school] district to work with youngsters at an early
age thus enhancing school success.
- The Jersey City Public Schools are able to ensure a child's readiness
for school with this program.
- The Housing Authority is better able to meet the needs of their tenant
families on site.
